Immunometabolic characteristics of pediatric tumors

Many tumors display an altered metabolism compared to healthy tissue, such as an enhanced glucose uptake, aberrant amino acid syntheses or an atypical fatty acid metabolism, facilitating tumor growth and metastatic progress. These alterations can be used as a novel target for innovative therapeutic approaches. Our team investigates therapeutic interventions to interfere with tumor-specific metabolic pathways and the interaction with effector cells of the immune system.

 

Many tumor cells show an enhanced fatty acid uptake and metabolism. These mechanisms can be exploited as novel therapeutic targets in Ewing sarcoma.
Treatment with TKIs interferes with the bioenergetics Pathway A, skewing the CML cell’s overall metabolic profile towards Pathway B, making CML cells more susceptible towards compounds targeting Pathway B.
